Both Federal and State governments have recognised the serious problems that Non-Conforming Building Products (NCBPs) are causing for consumers and the building industry and are investigating measures to combat the issue.

Building Minister’s Forum – Senior Officers Group

On 31 July 2015, the Building Ministers’ Forum, chaired by the Hon. Karen Andrews, Assistant Minister for Science, agreed to undertake several projects in relation to non-conforming building products. On 19 February 2016, the BMF met to receive the findings from these projects and agreed to develop an implementation plan to move forward with the findings. The Senior Official Groups of the Building Ministers’ Forum has released a report on their findings with a number of recommendations for next steps – click HERE.

In April 2016 BPIC made a formal response to the report – click HERE.

Commonwealth Senate Inquiry

On 23 June 2015, the Senate Economics Committee announced an inquiry into non-conforming building products. The Committee was scheduled to report its findings on 30 September 2016, however the Federal election and dissolution of both Houses of Parliament means that the Inquiry has now been formally lapsed. An interim report was released in May (click HERE) and it is hoped that following the election, the Inquiry will be reconvened in some manner.

In October 2015 BPIC made a formal submission to the Inquiry – click HERE.
