The Building Products Life Cycle Inventory

The purpose of the Building Products Life Cycle Inventory (BP LCI) is to enable the building and construction industry to conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) of buildings and infrastructure projects based on an industry agreed database of the environmental impacts for key building and construction materials and products.

The BP LCI has been developed by the Building Products Innovation Council (BPIC) with the assistance of Australian building product manufacturers and suppliers and with support from the Australian Government.

The BP LCI includes building materials and products available in Australia and may include components that have been manufactured offshore.

LCA is a complex process that requires a thorough understanding of the many environmental impacts of building products, the standards and methods for conducting an LCA and the inputs and outputs of LCA work.

This information sheet aims to describe the role and development of the BP LCI in a way that can be understood by all building industry professionals. Further information is available on this website to provide more details about the development and use of the BP LCI.

The Building Products Life Cycle Inventory provides:

  • a database of the environmental impacts of building products by product category that enables life cycle assessment of individual building or construction projects
  • guidance on the use of the life cycle inventory to conduct life cycle assessments
  • background information on the methodology used for the development of the life cycle inventory
