Purpose
The purpose of the Building Products Life Cycle Inventory (BP LCI) is to enable the Australian building industry to conduct Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of building products based on a nationally consistent method and database of building product environmental impacts.
LCA is a complex process that requires a thorough understanding of the many environmental impacts of building products, the standards and methods for conducting an LCA and both the inputs and outputs of LCA work. Our objective in this website is to describe the role and development of the BP LCI in a way that can be understood by all building industry professionals. There is considerable further information available on this website and the further resources listed in each section.
The Building Products Life Cycle Inventory (BP LCI) provides:
- Guidance on the use of Life Cycle Inventory methodology and data.
- Guidance on conducting Life Cycle Assessments for building products.
- A database of the environmental impacts of building products by product category that enables Life Cycle Assessment of specific building products. The list of products is shown below.
What is the BP LCI?
The BP LCI provides two fundamental building blocks required for building product LCA work:
1. Methodology – the recommended methods for measuring and reporting the environmental impact of building products and using this data for Life Cycle Assessment of building products.
2. Database – the information required to conduct life cycle assessment of building products.
